What are Rugby Boots

Rugby boots are designed with the need for player safety , power and stability, and in some cases based on the playing position of a player they are made with speed and agility in mind. This means that rugby boots are typically: wider, have a raised heel, have more and larger or lengthier studs, and may have a higher cut around the ankle

Without exception those boots used for football are made with speed and agility in mind , they may have a kicking surface on the toe area and are generally not suitable for rugby.

Specialist and positional rugby boots are generally wider than football boots. This is because in rugby, you do not have to kick the ball as regularly and a larger boot provides you with the extra power needed.

In fact Backs in particular may wear low cut lightweight boots due that are more contoured fit which aids in speed and agility.

Where our forwards are more likely to be found wearing boots made specifically for rugby with 6 studs at the front and 2 studs at the rear

Currently rugby boots are categorised into soft ground (SG) and firm ground (FG) boots.

Soft ground boots are made for playing on soft, natural surfaces (grass) which you will find throughout the world.

Firm Ground boots are used for Astro Turf grounds, also hard packed grounds as found in parts of Australia and Asian regions and in some cases semi frozen grounds in the UK and parts  of the USA , Canada and New Zealand or Europe

We must remember that all rugby boots must comply with guidelines laid down by the World Rugby and that referees throughout the world are the sole judge of what is safe and what is not.

Boots that have any sharp edges or ‘burring’ (burring is when an edge becomes worn and frayed in appearance often creating sharp edges) will not be allowed.

And whilst ‘blades’ are not banned in rugby they are more likely to burr and have sharp edges and become unsafe
